In the past month, the Starbucks Bearista Cup has become one of the most popular items on social media. Viral videos of long lines and sold out shelves spread across TikTok and Instagram, turning a simple cup into a “treasure.” But behind all the hype, it sparked a debate: Is it actually worth it, or are people just blindly trying to keep up with a social media trend?

A small glass cup with a bear design is simple and undeniably cute. However, besides its appearance, it does not offer anything new or special. The cup is made of clear glass with no insulation, which does not make your drink more enjoyable in any way. Despite this, prices continue to rise, especially through resellers. In many cases, the cup sells for double or even triple its original retail price, with some being resold for as high as $300.

People lined up outside Starbucks for hours before the stores opened, some arriving as early as 4 a.m. Others went to multiple locations in one day trying to find the cup. Customers even argued and elbowed each other just to get the cup when they found a location where it was in stock.

The popularity of the cup did not grow naturally. Social media is the main reason it became a trend. Influencers posted unboxing videos, Starbucks fans showed off their new cup, and suddenly everyone felt pressured to join in and buy the same thing. Thousands of people started to believe they “needed” the cup, even though in reality it was unnecessary.

Sophomores at San Clemente High, reflected on society’s overconsumption and our culture that is heavily reliant on the opinions of social media influencers. Amelia Winkler shared that, “[she] doesn’t think [that the Bearista Cup] is worth [the cost].” Additionally, Lila Whitaker added that “[she] thinks [the Bearista Cup] is over-hyped.” These opinions reveal that not all cave into the chaos of trends and influencing.

As social media made the item go viral, many people wanted to buy it just to say they had it, not because they actually needed or truly wanted it. All this chaos happened over a cup that will eventually be replaced by the next trend. Once the excitement fades, most people will realize it was not really worth it anymore and they will move on.

However, many people do not realize that this small trend shows how easily social media can manipulate people. When something is labeled “limited” or “special,” our brains immediately think it is more valuable and desirable. Additionally, appealing online promotion, as well as the desire to feel included, can make a simple item like a bear cup suddenly feels like a necessity.

The Starbucks Bearista Cup is a great example of how social media can turn an ordinary product into a worldwide trend. While the cup may look cute, it is far from essential. This small example proves that a trend on social media can cost people’s sanity and money over something that is simply not worth it.
