On December 6, the Downtown Business Association hosted its annual Putting on the Glitz at Avenida Del Mar. The event marked the beginning of the holiday season where the street was reserved for pedestrians and was covered in holiday cheer. The community event brought together small-businesses, families, and visitors for an evening of lights, music, and small-town charm.

As the sun set, the street began to light up with festive red and green decorations, sparkling storefronts, and strands of twinkling lights every which way. Shops stayed open late, offered limited holiday sales, treats, and giveaways that encouraged guests to stroll, explore and support local businesses. The energy was exciting, energetic, and welcoming, with each block featuring its own cluster of entertainment: carolers, live bands, and silent disco.

A highlight of the evening was the tree lighting, which drew in huge crowds eager to watch the switch flip and tree blast into color. Children lined up excitedly for visits with Santa Claus who also added a sprinkle of holiday cheer to every picture he was in. Additionally, the celebration features a variety of hands-on activities for children including ornament-making, face painting, and crafting booths that allow younger visitors to bring homemade souvenirs. Glitz attendee and SCHS sophomore Cali Carrillo “used to volunteer at the ornament making station.”

Local restaurants also joined the fun with seasonal menu items, warm drinks, and outdoor seating that made the atmosphere feel extra cheerful. Meanwhile, community groups and nonprofits hosted booths to share information about upcoming programs, volunteer opportunities, and ways residents can give back.

Beyond the main attractions, the Glitz also included extended hours for Del Mar’s shops and galleries, many of which offered raffles or locally made goods that were only available during the Glitz. SCHS sophomore, Eloise Jantz mentioned that her “mom won a Santa mug with hot cocoa stuff” at one of the street vendor tents.

Street vendors set up pop-up stands with handmade jewelry, baked goods, and other holiday items, which gave attendees a chance to purchase unique gifts. City staff and volunteers helped manage traffic and pedestrian flow, making the event run smoothly even with the huge turnouts.

Putting on the Glitz continues to serve as one of San Clemente’s most attended seasonal events, driving in both longtime residents and first-time visitors. With its musical performances, local shopping, and family friendly activities, it’s clear why this is a cherished San Clemente tradition. Also, the celebration uplifts small businesses while offering the community a lively start to the winter season.
