The word “aesthetic” is often used on social media apps to describe something stylish or as fitting into a certain genre of style. In recent months the “chic aesthetic” has taken over the fashion forward sections of Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok. However, I have noticed that the definition of chic within the media is slightly different from the actual definition.

Chic in its definition is used to simply describe something as stylish or fashionable. Recently, social media pages have been using the word to showcase simple and timeless articles of clothing, accessories or entire outfits. I find it interesting how the media has managed to give this word a whole new meaning and embodiment within the fashion world. We now see “chic” being used to help describe fashion staples such as a simple white tank top or a high end classic perfume one wears as a signature scent each day. The consistency of each of these classic pieces in modern style is what qualifies them as “chic.” Senior Gabriella Parrish defined chic as “sophisticated style that always looks elegant and put together.” Simplicity also plays a major role. For example, an outfit made up of a pair of nice blue jeans, a white t-shirt and black heels is considered very chic due to its timeless elements, however, it is incredibly simple. This is what gives it its classic look and appeal that has remained in style for many decades.
As “chic” continues to dominate the fashion world, it inspires many young women to dress with more elegance and refinery. Senior Ireland Lawrence mentioned how she loves “the chic aesthetic because it inspires her to dress up more of [her] simpler clothing items,” allowing her to style more dignified outfits that might not have been in style for our generation a few years ago. As this trend continues across all social media forms, there are many more people dressing with a more tasteful eye in order to serve and promote the current “chic” style as seen in the media.
