On Sunday, February 22, 2026, at the winter Olympic games in Milan, Team USA achieved a historic victory in men’s hockey by winning gold for the first time since 1980. The men’s hockey team won the gold medal over long-time rival Canada in overtime, ending the game at 2-1.

The moment of victory was 1 minute and 41 seconds into overtime, with Jack Hughes scoring the winning goal. This goal was even more remarkable as, earlier in the third period, Hughes suffered a high-stick to the mouth, causing him to shatter some of his front teeth. Despite his teeth getting knocked out, he still managed to make it back on the ice to bring a win to his team.

Goalie Conner Hellebuyck also played an insane game. With 41 saves throughout the whole game, he is considered to be the best player of the night because he saved all but one goal. Hockey fan and sophomore Avery Polanco mentioned, “Hellebuyck played great for USA. All his saves were really good, especially the no-looker.” His incredible performance blocked team Canada’s offense to keep the game tied, which allowed for his team to score.

Canada being the rivals of team USA added another level of tension to the game. Canada has dominated hockey, winning over twice as many Olympic medals as the United States in past decades. Freshman and hockey player Cora Dollar explained how “the game was really exciting to watch and you could feel the energy from both teams the entire time.” Their match-ups are always highly stressful and competitive. Defeating their rivals in overtime made the victory even more significant.

This was arguably the biggest game and victory out of the entire 2026 Olympic games. President Trump even called the team immediately after the win to congratulate them. Social media also erupted with patriotism, from seeing hockey fans posting their watch parties during the game-winning shot to jumping up and down on airplanes.

America has been waiting 46 years for their hockey team to win gold since their last win in 1980. This game was a major milestone for team USA, with incredible performances from players like Hughes and Hellebuyck. Beating Canada made the win even more important, highlighting the team’s ability to work together.
