Surf Team Wins 15th NSSA State Championship!

This weekend the San Clemente High Surf Team competed at San Onofre State Beach (Churches) for the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) Championships.

The Tritons were looking for their 6th title in as many years, and 15th title total, both truly unfathomable marks.

“It was a great showing for SCHS surfing!” said Triton head coach John Dowell.

They were led by sophomore Connor Dand, who placed first in the men’s division, and edged out Huntington Beach High School who placed a close second.

“Dand was by far the MVP of the contest helping earn the team more points than any other surfer throughout the weekend,” Dowell said. “But the team performed well from top to bottom and it was a real team win this year.”

Among the other standouts for SCHS was senior Andy Nieblas who placed second in the longboard division, sophomore Malia Osterkamp who placed second in women’s overall, and lastly, freshman Kei Kobayashi who also placed second in the men’s division overall.

“It was all our surfers who helped to keep the Triton tradition of dominating at the NSSA State Championships alive!”
