The San Clemente High School girls volleyball team showed resilience as they battle every team, regardless of their ranking, all year long. Like last year, the Tritons were in a dog fight with Aliso Viejo since September for the South Coast League and, once again, ended up in a tie for the championship. SCHS currently has a 5-2 record in league, 22-9 overall and are currently ranked 11 in California, according to CIF.

“The season was pretty successful,” senior outside hitter Lily Dwinell said. “With ups and downs but the season ended how we wanted it.” Dwinell leads the Tritons this year in kills and blocks. She is set to play D1 volleyball at the University of Colorado Boulder next year. Sko Buffs.

But how did the Dwinell-led Tritons get their 4th consecutive league championship?

On Wednesday, October 12, the Tritons celebrated their senior night and also a chance to put themselves in position to win a South Coast League title. Playing against Tesoro at home, the girls demonstrate their skills and teamwork as they won all three and ended the match in a “sweep.” All the seniors got to start and play all three games, which was special because this may be their last game of their high school careers on their home court. The bench was loud and excited to support their teammates – they brought the hype and energy to the gym with their cheering.

Junior libero Gisele Galbansini said, “This season has been phenomenal for us, we have come back from injuries, from trials, from tribulations, but we managed to push through.” She feels that the “sky is the limit” for the future of girls volleyball.

Head Coach Swenson describes this season as pretty good, as they have “had a lot of really big wins against top teams in the state.” After having a three-way tie for league champions, they are extremely excited to play in CIF and hopefully state.

As for next season, Swenson said, “I’m excited  to build on the culture we have already created in the program for the younger girls to develop and continue to get better.”

Come support the girls at their upcoming games in CIF as they play some of the best competition in California! Schedules will be released later this week.
