As this semester starts to wind down and fall sports come to a close, San Clemente’s winter sports are more ready than ever. While most are in the early stages of preseason, there is a lot of anticipation as we return from winter break.

Girls soccer, D1 CIF Quarterfinalists fresh off of winning the South Coast League title for the second year in a row, look to come out even stronger this year. After their disheartening and controversial playoff loss to Santa Margarita, the team looks to put the past behind them and start new. Although several seniors graduated last year, this year’s seniors such as Gianna Feldsien are looking to step in and assume those pivotal roles. When asked about the upcoming season, Feldsien stated that, “creating a positive team culture early in the season and getting everybody on the same page of what our goal is will be essential to our success in league and CIF.” Come and support their first home game of the year on Tuesday (12/12) against Los Osos at 5:30 pm.

Riding the high of winning the Division 2 CIF-SS soccer championship last year, the boy’s soccer team has their sights set on accomplishing just that this season. After winning 2-0 in the CIF-SS championship, which propelled them onto state, they came up just short in the finals. With their team-first mentality, the possibilities are endless for this team and what they can accomplish. After tying both El Dorado and Santa Ana, two tough opponents, the team looks to get their first of many wins this season. Be there next Friday (12/15) to watch them take on Palos Verdes at 5:00 pm!

Girls basketball, who also made it to the CIF Quarterfinals in D2 last year and came in a close second to San Juan Hills, hopes to go even farther this year. Unfortunately, the Tritons will have to adapt with star senior center, Zona Miller, out for the season with an ACL injury. Zona commented that, “the team is in good hands” with seniors at the helm such as Sienna Taus and Claire Pham, as well as a strong group of underclassmen. Facing more tough competition, the team’s goal is to “just keep growing and improving as a team.” The Tritons recently took a trip to Hawaii for their latest tournament and had a great run. Be sure to wish them good luck in the Segerstrom tournament next week!

Looking to improve on last season, the Triton boys’ basketball team is currently 8-3 and is deep into their preseason schedule. Before losing a tight game last week to Dana Hills, the Tritons had been on an impressive 5 game-winning streak throughout tournament and non-league play. Come cheer them on for their third home game of the year next Monday (12/11) in the main gym at 7:00 pm against Irvine.

The Triton girls’ wrestling team looks to continue their success this year with new head coach Adrienna Jenkins. After starting off the week with a dominant showing at the Santa Ana Invitational, placing 3rd out of 49 schools, they head into their first league duel against Tesoro on Wednesday (12/5).

Finishing 18-10 last year, the girls’ water polo team feels confident that they can achieve their eighth straight league championship. Besides being undefeated in league, the girls look to make another long run in CIF and redeem themselves after taking an unfortunate loss to Woodrow Wilson in the quarterfinals. When talking with varsity junior Liv Bedeker, she said that she, “was most excited to play with a great team” and continue to build their strong team chemistry. Their next game is Thursday (12/7) against Villa Park in tournament play.

With a multitude of promising teams and events every week make sure to attend and cheer on your fellow SCHS student-athletes! Let’s go Tritons!
