This weekend is the third weekend in February, nationally recognized as President’s Day to commemorate George Washington’s birthday. Our school extends this national holiday into a four-day break for students, allowing ample time for short trips and sleeping in. However, this year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday, which snatched-up Tritons will certainly be spending with their beloved. With endless leisure opportunities, how are students spending their President’s Day weekend?
Although it was previously mentioned that President’s Day is a national rest to honor our first president, people often confuse his birthday with Abraham Lincoln’s. Lincoln’s birthday is today, the 12th, which, holiday-placement wise, makes more sense than Washington’s on the 22nd. Officially, the vacation is set aside for Washington, but this confusion has led to the holiday being publicly considered President’s Day to celebrate both. Some would assume that we have two school days off, with one for each president. However, it is more likely that this Friday is being used as district mandated training day for our teachers. This, of course, is very lucky for students.

Arguably, four days is just enough time for a decent vacation. Some students and their families are spending their weekend elsewhere. Amelia Winkler, a sophomore, explained, “I am heading to Nevada to snowboard this weekend! Hopefully, there will be plenty of snow. Four-days is more than enough time for my family.” This weekend is timed perfectly, aligning with the season, and allowing students to get in some of their favorite winter sports. Conversely, other students plan on taking it down to Mexico, or another tropical destination, and soak up the temperate weather.
To some, Valentine’s Day serves as a harsh reminder of loneliness, but to others, it is a special day to spend with your significant other. This weekend, our students have a variety of Valentine’s Day related plans. Gaby Aguilar, a sophomore here at SCHS, is spending the day with her boyfriend. Yet, she is still making time for some “galentine’s” events with her friends. She said, “[My boyfriend] and I are going out for the day, but [my friend group] is working to plan a galentine’s get together also. It is gonna be pretty expensive for me.”
Overall, Tritons this weekend will be either relaxing, taking vacations, or spending time with their loved ones. With this national holiday, our students have this opportunity for extra rest and extended Valentine’s Day plans. And on behalf of the student body, I would like to thank George Washington.
