If you know of her, you either love her or hate her.

Anna Sorokin (or Anna Delvey) was released from prison just a few weeks ago after presenting a $10,000 bail. Though she is out of prison, she still receives strict supervision in her East Village New York apartment and is accompanied by her new fashion accessory: an ankle monitor.

She gained popularity early this year when she signed with Netflix to let them adopt her life story of coming to America pretending to be a German Heiress and turn it into a drama TV show in hopes of shining light on her unique lifestyle. The numbers speak for themselves when it comes to getting her message out there. The show Inventing Anna rocketed to #1 in the U.S just within a few days after airing. This documentary sparked a lot of interest in who she was and if her story was true. Anna Sorokin was arrested in 2017 with eight charges against her, including 2nd-degree grand larceny, theft of services, and 1st-degree attempted grand larceny. These are serious charges, and make the people who believe she’s innocent seem outlandish.

The opposing arguments usually are along the lines of her only being in 20s and not necessarily knowing what she was doing. The public has also seen her story in another way: someone who bloomed under capitalism, and took advantage of a male dominated business system in America. Why would a young woman like Anna be doing anything illegal? Why should I be worried about someone who looks self-centered? These were all questions that were raised by her soon-to-be victims. She took advantage of the system, and still received hundreds of thousands of dollars from big-name banks, “friends,” and boyfriends.

The actions she committed took the super-rich society of New York by surprise; she so easily snuck her way into the life they were living in. She was in a place where people can so easily be blinded by the show of money, it is impossible to see anything else. This is where the understanding of Anna’s ambitions can be understood differently. Was it her fault that she believed coming to America with nothing but a vision could make her dreams come true? After all, we are surrounded by in America these days are teenagers and young adults who become millionaires overnight.
