The ASB president of a high school is a job that is often overlooked but the work put in and leadership skills required to fill the role is a hard task. This week, San Clemente High School hosted our annual election where new class presidents are chosen along with a new ASB president and Vice President. For this upcoming year, the new ASB President is Lyra Corbett and the Vice President is Allie Borderging. These two will work alongside each other in the 2024-2025 school year.

Lyra Corbett was born and raised in San Clemente and attended Shorecliffs Middle School before making the shift to San Clemente High School. She has been involved in ASB and Cheer since freshman year, making her an excellent resource to have as an ASB member; her participation in cheer has allowed the gaps between the two programs to be filled. Following high school Lyra hopes to attend The University of Tennessee and major in Business. With Lyra as the ASB president next year, that bridge will only draw closer while she continues her service on the cheerleading team.

As Lyra battled her way through the elections against some amazing competition, she worked to accumulate the most votes from the freshman sophomores and juniors. I asked Lyra to break down her thoughts after the election and if she has any words of wisdom for this upcoming year. She said, “These past three days of elections have been crazy, but looking back and seeing all the hard work and dedication that went into my campaign, the payoff is seriously the best feeling! These 3 days were so exciting and fulfilling being able to get votes from students that trust I will make SCHS the best for them was such an amazing rush. Whether it was from friends and classmates or being able to meet all the students in other grades- it was so much fun.” She then went on to finish with, “I cannot be more excited for the next year and can’t wait to collaborate with such a fantastic VP Allie!!”

The new ASB Vice President, Allie Borderging, is going to be a junior next year. Allie attended Vista Del Mar Middle School and is also a lifelong San Clemente resident. Allie has played soccer her whole life and she fills her time with a very rigorous academic schedule. Following high school, Allie hopes to attend a four-year university and major in Biology. In the election, Allie’s campaign video made its way onto the Instagram explore page and has accumulated over 90 thousand views. Although the majority of these viewers are ineligible to vote because they are not SCHS students, her success in campaigning was reflected in her win.

After discussing the duties and roles that must be fulfilled for an ASB Vice President, I asked Allie what her goals and messages for next year are. She said, “I’m so thankful to be chosen for this position and I couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support and encouragement throughout the election process. Although campaigning was testing, the outcome was 100% worth it! I am so hopeful for next year and can’t wait to implement all my ideas for SCHS.”

I am confident that Lyra and Allie are going to do an excellent job next year working to improve the school and successfully lead ASB. My brief advice to both of them (as the current ASB President) is to work hard and make sure everything is carried out successfully but to not forget that they should enjoy their time as leaders and work to develop a connection with ASB members. There is a balance between being a leader and a friend, and when you successfully build and carry out that balance, all is well. Best of luck to you two, and I wish you the best.
